What is Fistula? (60 second video)
Fistula Foundation believes no woman should endure a life of misery and isolation simply for trying to bring a child into this world. That’s why they are dedicated to ending the suffering caused by obstetric fistula, a hole between the vagina and rectum or bladder caused by prolonged, unrelieved obstructed labor that renders a woman incontinent of urine or faeces or both – a childbirth injury that can only be treated with surgery that, on average, costs $586 and takes 1 hour to complete.

Fistula Foundation supports treatment in more than 20 countries on two continents, Africa and Asia, funding more fistula repair surgeries than any other fistula organization in the world not receiving government funding. They focus on three key elements in fistula care – patients, doctors and facilities – and partner with carefully vetted sites that are coordinated and staffed by local nurses, heroic doctors and health care workers who understand the communities they serve and understand how to provide the best possible care to the women they treat. While Fistula Foundation funds a number of programs such as surgeon training and community outreach, the true heart of their work is providing life-changing surgeries to as many women as possible – since 2009, Fistula Foundation has funded more than 19,000 surgeries!

For every woman who receives treatment, however, 50 more go without. There are an estimated 1 million women suffering from obstetric fistula worldwide and Fistula Foundation needs your help to expand surgical capacity and provide free fistula repair services around the world.
